Not long ago, I overheard a young person say, “Everyone is telling me what to do. I don’t need advice! I just need them to listen to me.” It reminded me of Job and his friends who were eager to blame Job for his tragic misfortunes and who gave him much unwanted and unhelpful advice. No doubt Job would agree, sometimes we just need someone to listen to us.
Of course, Job was not shy about expounding on life’s woes, but in the midst of his darkest hour, hope shines through in one of the most eloquent passages found in the Old Testament:
“For there is hope for a tree,
If it is cut down, that it will sprout again,
And that its tender shoots will not cease.
Though its root may grow old in the earth,
And its stump may die in the ground,
Yet at the scent of water it will bud
And bring forth branches like a plant.” Job 14:7-9
What a beautiful glimpse of resurrection power and description of how the Holy Spirit works resurrection life in us who believe in Jesus Christ.
If today you are struggling to hold onto hope, my prayer is that you will become aware of and respond “at the scent of water” to God’s whispers of love watering your battered, tired, and thirsty soul!
“At the scent of water”…
Job 14:7-9
